Recent Findings in Trace Element Nutrition
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies in South Australia in the 1930-40's showed that the coastal areas .and, to a lesser extent, the areas inland had inadequate levels of cobalt and copper for livestock health and production. Since these studies, selenium responsive conditions have been recognised in livestock depastured on the ironstone soils in the higher rainfall areas and also in isolated, but at present ill-defined, areas in the southeast of the State. The extent to which other trace element inadequacies are limiting livestcck production in this State is not known but productivity responses to manganese and zinc supplements have been obtained in sheep at pasture.

Assessing the trace element status of man.
Recent developments in human trace element nutrition have revealed the need for adequate means of assessing trace element status but, with the notable exception of iron, methods remain grossly inadequate. This applies to the detection of clinically significant deficiency states and even more to the detection of minor deviations from optimal tissue reserves. There is a disturbing tendency for ov...

Stem cell proliferation, neuronal differentiation, cell survival, and migration in the central nervous system are all important steps in the normal process of neurogenesis. These mechanisms are highly active during gestational and early neonatal brain development. Additionally, in select regions of the brain, stem cells give rise to new neurons throughout the human lifespan. Recent work has rev...

Deficiencies of iron and zinc are common worldwide. Various strategies have been used to combat these deficiencies including supplementation, food fortification and modification of food preparation and processing methods. A new possible strategy is to use biotechnology to improve trace element nutrition. Genetic engineering can be used in several ways; the most obvious is to increase the trace ...
متن کاملTrace-element nutrition in health and disease: contributions and problems of analysis.
Most imbalances of trace-element nutrition are characterized by the absence of acute, easily recognizable disease. To diagnose marginal deficiencies or excesses of trace elements, the analyst must use rather sophisticated procedures, and even where an imbalance of trace-element nutrition can be proven, the implications for health are not always evident. Previous attempts to connect deviations o...
متن کاملZinc supplementation: neuroprotective or neurotoxic?
While zinc is essential for normal brain function and repair, recent work has implicated this trace element in the neuronal damage and death that follow traumatic brain injury, stroke, and seizure. Therefore, the development of new zinc-based therapeutic strategies will need to consider the emerging roles of zinc in the central nervous system.
